I rarely take a break from writing, but when a sailing race gives me an opportunity to be on the race committee, I take it. So from Friday through Sunday, I was on Signal 1 for the International Rolex Regatta, checking in boats from all over the world, manning the class flags and helping take protests. We had the good fortune to be hosted this year on a Privilege 44 catamaran. We got rained on the first day, but after that it was sunny.
What do you do to take a break?
I’d love to run away with the rich and famous! Beautiful picture. There’s a great romance novel in there somewhere.
Thank you. I’ve got one character I’m sending to the West Indies.
Looks nice.
Casea, Thanks.
Sounds like an exciting break! When I take a break it’s usually to do family stuff, but sailing sounds fun too 🙂
I love sailing. It’s a lot of fun.
Wow, do you live a glamorous life! I like to trail ride in the mountans with my daughter, or friends.
D’Ann, that sounds like fun.
I work out in my yard. Gardening gives me that much needed break from writing and the computer.
I used to garden quite a bit and found it calmed me down.
Ooh that sounds like a fantastic break! Hope you had fun!
I like to draw, garden, anything that allows me to be creative.
We had a lot of fun. I can’t draw, but I do like to garden.
I like to work outside, cook, read and take nature walks…but after seeing your pic and hearing what you do, seems kind of boring! lol
I’m going to look up sky diving or something! hehehe
Fun post Ella!
If we ever get together, I’ll tell you my sky diving saga.
What a great way to take a break! Personally, I play tennis. Almost everyday. I get up, check up emails and then dash to the courts. I write when I come back home, until it’s time to play again in the evening. Keeps me active!
Carole, What a great way to keep going.
How fun!
If I catch a breath, it’s usually spent on chores. But as the weather gets nicer, we’ll be spending weekends at the beach house. Ahhh….sun, sand, waves, relaxing, watching the kids, and hanging out with friends. What’s even better is that I get to do a little work, too, while the toddler takes a nap. I’ll sit on the deck while everyone else is on the beach and write or edit.
Good times…good times…
Jenn!
Beach houses are fun. Have a good time.
I make quilts when I take a break. It gives my muse a chance to figure out why they are happy or not and gives me a chance to be creative with color. I make them and give them away in memory of our daughter we lost to cancer ten years ago. Love that big smile when I hand them over.
Sailing looked fun. Any time I can spend at the ocean is always a relaxing time. I grew up close to Bodega Bay (of The Birds fame) and seem to get the calling to return every so often.
Paisley, I agree. The ocean can be very calming. I’m sorry to hear about your daughter, but I’m glad you are doing something to make others happy.
I go south and soak up sun on long walks on the beach. But that usually doesn’t take me away from writing because my head goes crazy with plot ideas and using the people on the beach as characters -if they knew what I had them doing 😉
LOL. Daryl, that’s great!
Sounds like a fabulous time!
With 4 kids in home I don’t do a lot of relaxing, but reading in bed is a nice, quiet time for me that helps destress and get me ready for bed.
It was a lot of fun. What everyone needs to remember is that it’s a 15 minute drive to the yacht club for me. Thanks for commenting.
I read or game. Or perhaps television or a movie.
I read a lot or game. I am a gamer.
I read. That’s my break. Sounds cheesy I know, but it’s true.
Writing is my break from life (job, family, pets, etc) but when i need something really different I read or go to the movies. Escape fiction–writing it or reading it! LOL
Certainly nothing as exciting as that! I like to go camping with the kids. We have a strict no electronics rule. At first it’s hard to adjust, but it’s a nice break from the real world. Of course I have millions of emails when we return, but it’s worth it to take a break and enjoy nature every once in a while.
Ally, I totally agree with the no electronics part.
Ah, breaks. These days, my breaks are spent writing because I have so many other things to do. My writing breaks are the best breaks ever because I miss it so much.
LOL. Toni, thanks for commenting.
Break? What is this break you speak of? Every time I try to take a break I have all sorts of people telling me to crawl back in my cave and write !! WAAAAAAH!!
As I work a full-time job most of my “Spare” time is spent writing. And researching. Actually researching is sort of a break for me. I can immerse myself in it and not come up for hours.
My other sources of relaxation include reading, quilting – which I don’t get to do as much since I started writing, and spending time with my dogs – they all have PhD’s and gold medals in relaxation and meditation.
Louisa, You were the one who queried a book that wasn’t finished. Tsk,tsk. Now,back to the cave.
Actually I didn’t query this one. The requests came from contests! The one I queried is finished and so far I am getting no takers. SIGH. Back in the cave now.
