It’s time for another round of Give Me Your Favorite Line. Whether it’s from a movie, TV, your book or someone else’s, what’s your favorite line?
Here is mine from The Secret Life of Miss Anna Marsh. Lord Rutherford, the hero is talking to his friend about how he’s going to get the heroine to agree to marry him.
Rutherford raised himself to his full height of over six feet two inches. “I have no intention of failing. I am descended from Norman warlords, I’ll have you know.”
“Aren’t we all,” Marcus replied dryly. “Just who do you think she’s descended from? Think about it.”
From “While You Were Sleeping”: “Mmmm, these potatoes are sooo creamy.” Cracks me up EVERY time! And if you haven’t watched the movie, you’re missing out!
Hi Stacy. Very funny. Thanks for coming by.
This one is not unusual, but it certainly fits my philosophy!:
“Give a girl an education and introduce her properly into the world, and ten to one but she has the means of settling well, without further expense to anybody.” – Jane Austen
Vic, that’s wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing.
One of my favorite lines from one of my all-time favorite characters. Cadvan of Lirigon from Alison Croggon’s The Riddle.
“Love is one of the true mysteries,” hesaid at last. “The truest and the deepest of all. One thing Maerad: to love is never wrong. It may be disasterous; it may never be possible; it may be the deepest agony. But it is never wrong.”
Hi Casea. That was lovely. I can see why it’s your favorite.
Most of my favourite lines come from TV shows or movies. And since I’m a sci-fi fan – the lines go from Beam me up, Scotty to May the force be with you.
Daryl, Thanks for coming by. I love those lines.
“You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” My favorite line from the movie that started the summer blockbusters. Do you know what movie it is, Ella?
I have no idea, I haven’t seen a movie in almost a year. But I’m going to guess it was Ice Age.
It was from Jaws.
When Jaws came out I was in Army basic training. No movies there.
LOL, great banter Ella. I love your male characters and their sense of humor!
He’s a snippet from my novel The Gilded Cuff. Emery, the hero, has Sophie pinned to the floor and they are arguing.
Holding onto her, he lifted her up as he stood and then he dropped to his knees on the thick carpet by the couch and efficiently pinned her to the ground beneath him. She was trapped chest to toes and couldn’t move, except for her head.
“Still think I’m bluffing?”
Sophie had the good sense to look hesitant before replying. “Okay, so obviously playing strip poker with you any time soon is out of the question, because I can’t read you at all.”
“Strip poker? That’s an excellent idea for later. I’m damn good at cards.” He couldn’t resist leering down at her and she laughed.
LOL. Very cute, Lauren.
Never give up! Never surrender! – Galaxy Quest (to inspire me to get back to the keyboard)
Great words! Thanks for coming by.
“Don’t compromise, even if it hurts to be yourself.”
~ Garth Brooks
I found this quote after receiving the first of many rejections for my book Remedy Maker.
Great quote, Sheri. Thank you.
Love ’em all!
This is Shot Through the Heart, just released from Crimson.
“Don’t,” she pleaded just before he let go.
D’Ann, I want more. Thanks for coming by.
“Let’s stick to the plan. It’s a good plan. Everybody wants to go to the party, but nobody wants to stay and clean up.” — Robert Deniro in RONIN as they are planning an ambush.
LOL. That’s great and so true!
As far as I’m concerned, there is only ONE line:
“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
LOL, Callie. This is not the first time I’ve done this post, but it is the first time someone has given me that line, and I’ve been waiting for it.
Maybe it’s our age,Ella, lol.
Probably.
I vote for Callie’s line.
Angelyn, that’s taking the easy way out.
Love all the lines. My mind won’t function and bring one up. I love Lord of the Rings they have some great ones. I know the scene is where Gimili is telling Aragorn to toss him. Then he says “Just don’t tell the Elf.” Araon looks at him and says, “Not a word.” Or how about Gandalf’s words, “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!”
Both great, CK.
Hi Ella! Fun post. Loved everyone’s favorite lines. I’m a bit partial to, “It’s not the length of life, but depth of life.”
I like that one too. But there’s no contest.
Great post, Ella!
“I hope, or I could not live.” H.G. Wells The Island of Dr. Moreau.
Wonderful. Thanks for stopping by.
This was my favorite quote when I was sixteen. Baby from Dirty Dancing: Me? I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.
I remember that. Great line, Ally.
Some great quotes here, as usual !! Poor Rutherford doesn’t stand a chance, does he? 🙂
Here is one of my favorite exchanges from my very first manuscript – LOST IN LOVE.
Marcus turned to find his mother sitting, eyes closed, apparently talking to herself. “What on earth are you doing?”
The eyes that popped open to meet his were not those of a loving mother. They looked more like those of a lioness about to eat her young.
“I am attempting to think of the proper way to address my son, who is also a duke, in terms that will not be an affront to either his dignity or mine.” She spoke rather precisely.
He hated it when she was precise. It usually meant she was trying to decide the ideal way in which to punish him without appearing to do so. Frightening.
“To hell with dignity, Mother, what is it you want to say?”
“Yes, well.” She sniffed. ”You have certainly done a bang up job of sending your own dignity to hell, dearest. As I still have hopes of maintaining a scrap of mine, I was attempting to think of a way to address you appropriate to this afternoon’s events.”
“Address me? What on earth do you mean? I am Marcus. Your son. Selridge. Will none of those do?”
“It may well take me a moment to get to those. The first words that come to mind are —You unmitigated ass. – You addlepated bully. – or perhaps – I cannot believe I gave birth to such an idiot.”
“On the contrary, madam,” Marcus said as he collapsed into a chair before the hearth. “You seem to have arrived at any number of ways to address me.”
Hahahaha. That’s great!
My favorite line is from Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier.
“All Ruby’s talk was of exertion…To Ada, Ruby’s monologues seemed composed mainly of verbs, all of them tiring. Plow, plant, hoe, cut, can, feed, kill.”
I love the “verbs, all of them tiring.” bit 🙂
Hi Cheryl. That’s a good one. Thank you.
I know one day I am going to base a character around hubby’s comment, not sure if it will be before or after i throttle him mind….
“The game is called I WIN for a reason.”
….also thinking the heat level in that book might be a bit more than warm 😉
Lezli
LOL, Lezli. Love it.
I love watching The Big Bang Theory. My favorite line came when the 4 friends were with their boss at the University. Someone doubted a fact about Wallowitz’s project.
“Please,” he said. “I have a Masters after all.”
His boss said “Who doesn’t?”

Thank you. You’re making me blush.
I just came to visit and enjoyed it. I’m too late for this particular party, but I’ll be back! Hi, Ella!
Hi Liz, Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad you liked it.
We have dozens, so forcing ourselves to choose one was so hard. But, I guess we’ll go with: Anne Rice/Interview With The Vampire: “Don’t Be Afraid. I’m going to give you the choice, I never had.”
Nice. Thanks for sharing.
“Mad, bad, and dangerous to know.” With any luck this is how people will describe me before I die.
That was good. Thank you Madeline.
